Optimised production processes for bipolar plates

Despite a very high filler content in composites for bipolar plates (filling grade 70 – 90 wt%) ZBT processes bipolar plates for PEM-fuel cells mainly by injection moulding directly with all the required structures on both sides. Such produced bipolar plates show a very high electrical and thermal conductivity and an outstanding chemical resistivity.

The main benefit of injection moulding is the production of such plates in very short cycle times and hence very cheap.


Furthermore, ZBT offers the service to mould different composites for different applications and when required hand in hand with the customer.

  • Bipolar plates for low temperature PEM fuel cells based on polypropylene
  • Bipolar plates for high temperature PEM fuel cells based on polyphenylene sulphide
  • For other applications such as heat sink, heat transfer, batteries…

For those services ZBT offers comprehensive machine equipment:

  • Small piston injection moulding machine for samples
  • Fully hydraulic injection moulding machine (Krauss Maffei KM300)
  • Fully hydraulic injection moulding machine (Krauss Maffay KM500) additionally equipped for high injection power (max. 450 °C, 350 MPa)

For characterisation of the injection moulded parts ZBT offers the following equipment:

  • Device for mechanical testing (possible in climatic chamber)
  • Helium pycnometer for measuring the density
  • Four pole measurement device for determining the electrical conductivity (separated in bulk and contact resistivity and for different pressures and temperatures)
  • Apparatus for measurement of permeability (H2)
  • Hot Disc apparatus for measuring the thermal conductivity)
  • Devices for ex-situ accelerated ageing of the composites
  • FRT Apparatus for topographically and microscopically analyses
