Gaskets for Fuel Cells

The reproducible application of gaskets on graphitic or metallic bipolar plates is an essential topic for fuel cell stack technologies. Depending on the bipolar plate technologies, design, operating temperatures, MEA and GDL thickness different gasket solutions have to be used. ZBT offers solutions for the application of gaskets on metallic and grafitic bipolar plates as service for pre-series production processes and prototypes.

Application of liquid sealant by dosing

A volumetric stand alone dosing system is used. This system and the integradet CAM - Software allow the flexible realisation of gasket geometries regarding height and design. Thereby gaskets for prototpye stacks and mini-series are being produced using liquid sealants as silicone, FKM etc.).

Application of liquid sealant by screen printing

In small series and larger series the application of gaskets using screen printing is optimal as printing time and reproducability is optimal. ZBT uses a fully automated printer including heating oven within a demonstration line. This site ihas been proven for grafitic bipolar plates, processes for sheet metal bipolar polates are under development.

Cutting of sheet materials

Laser-cutted FKM-gasket for HT-PEM

With a laser cutting machine sheet gasket materials are being processed, resulting in complex gaskets for fuel cells. Designs are being imported using AutoCad- and CorelDraw-data to produce the gaskets tool-less. Various materials as FKM, silicone, THV and PTFE have successfully been processed, the lasecutting width of only 75µm and the reproducability of 5µm also allows precise micro strcuturing and graving.
